Jocelyn Bell was born on July 15, 1943 in Northern Ireland. In 1965 she took a degree in physics from the University of Glasgow. Later that same year, he began his PhD at the University of Cambridge. Today she is the head of the Physics Department of the Open University, England. She has received many medals, honors and awards for his work in the field of astronomy. More than thirty years after her discovery Jocelyn Bell Burnell is a well-known astrophysicist and for everybody the true and only discoverer of pulsars.
Listening to the background noise of the sky recording, Bell found a signal pulsing steadily, roughly once a second. At first, the source was called LGM-1, where LGM is an acronym for Little Green Men; in fact, Bell and Hewish thought that it was an extraterrestrial signal, as it appeared too regular to be natural. The source was later identified as a very high-speed rotating neutron star and is now officially recognized as PSR B1919+21.
The Nobel Prize for her discovery was awarded to her thesis supervisor, Professor Anthony Ewish, and the young woman was not even mentioned at the award ceremony. This fact proves how misogynistic the society of the time was.Bell herself later said in an interview that people at the time assumed that scientific achievements belonged to the lab head, always an elderly man, and that young researchers simply followed orders.
